SHOCK Chapter 27
by REX-NOVELISTSThe woman nodded frantically, “Over there… there’s a dry well.”
Zhou Wu couldn’t be careless with the old man’s body. He found a flat hillside, dug a pit, and erected a mound for him.
He also had the woman and her child drink some thin porridge. Then, driving the ox cart, he took them both away from the village.
Zhou Wu intended to take the mother and son far away from this place, to a place they could never return from.
He glanced regretfully at the weapons. Clearly, he couldn’t carry them with him.
He could only throw them away along the way.
Leaving the village, walking on the desolate field path, the woman led her child down from the cart.
Who knew that the woman would only lead her child, following the ox cart on foot.
Zhou Wu frowned and asked, “What’s wrong?”
The woman hesitated and said, “We both eat a lot, but the ox eats little. Don’t let the ox get too tired, and we can save some food.”
They walked until dark, without encountering a single village, and had to camp in the wild.
Zhou Wu built a bonfire, hung the porridge pot, and began to cook porridge, imitating the mute old man.
The woman held her child in her arms, sitting by the fire, staring blankly at the flickering flames.
The child looked up, “Dog Paw.”
“What?”
“Dog Paw.”
Zhou Wu scratched his head. Was that really a name?
“Where’s your dad?”
“Dead.”
“Are you farmers?”
This time, the woman answered, “That village was our home, but we had no land to till.”
“Isn’t there land everywhere here?”
Zhou Wu pointed around.
“We can’t till it. Even if we could, there would be no harvest.”
“Why?”
“Once the crops are ripe, the ones who come to collect won’t be us.”
Zhou Wu nodded. That was true. Even if you planted crops, you wouldn’t be able to harvest the grain.
Seeing that Zhou Wu was gentle, the woman boldly asked, “You, where are you taking us?”
“To a place we can’t return to.”
“You’re not going to kill us?”
“If I wanted to kill you, I wouldn’t have gone so far.”
The woman shook her head sadly, “Even if you don’t kill us, we won’t live long.”
“Take your child and find another family to live with.”
“Who would want someone who just eats for free?”
“I can have children for them.”
The woman raised her head, looking directly at Zhou Wu for the first time.
“I can have children for you, as long as you give us both a bite to eat.”
Zhou Wu smiled wryly, speechless.
The woman, seeing that he didn’t speak, even used her collar to wipe her face.
“I’m very good-looking. People in the village all said I was pretty.”
“I’m not lying to you. Two mu of land can’t harvest much grain.”
“Why am I not a farmer? I have a travel permit.”
Zhou Wu imitated her speech.
“Yes.”
“I’ve never seen a farmer ride in his own ox cart.”
Zhou Wu was stunned. He really hadn’t thought about that.
The woman continued, “You didn’t even blink when you killed people, and you didn’t even look at those clothes.”
“Uh, I learned martial arts from my dad when I was little, for self-defense. What’s wrong with that?”
Zhou Wu weakly defended himself, but smiled bitterly inwardly. He had revealed so many flaws that even a peasant woman could see through him.
Alas, what a failed assassin he was.
“You’re not afraid of ghosts, and you can beat so many people. You’re not an ordinary person at all.”
Zhou Wu couldn’t justify himself anymore, so he simply shut his mouth and concentrated on cooking porridge.
The woman continued to mutter.
How could he face this?
Zhou Wu said angrily.
He had been exposed, and even a country peasant woman had seen through his disguise. He was ashamed and angry.
Seeing Zhou Wu get angry, the peasant woman shrank her neck and stopped talking.
Zhou Wu angrily shouted, “Dog Paw, eat!”
The child quickly nodded, reaching out with two black and skinny paws to grab the pot.
The peasant woman slapped his hand away.
“You’ll burn yourself, you Dog Paw!”
As the three of them were drinking the thin porridge, Zhou Wu suddenly asked, “If I don’t look like a farmer, what do I look like?”
Zhou Wu fell silent, pondering. If he couldn’t even pretend to be a farmer, he might as well join a gang to better conceal his fake identity.
But if he became a gang member, how would Dugou Qingping (False) find him?
Zhou Wu clutched his head in a headache.
Alas, why was it so difficult? He couldn’t earn money in his previous life, but here he could lose his life.
Look at what they were eating, stuff that even pigs wouldn’t eat.
And look at what he was wearing, clothes made of coarse linen that chafed his skin after walking for a while.
The worn-out hemp shoes on his feet would give him blisters after a few steps.
Zhou Wu looked up at her.
Although this peasant woman claimed to be a peasant woman, she was very clever and could see through so many of his flaws.
“It’s true. My maiden name is Liang, Liáng Nv. My family used to have a few mu of land, but now it’s all deserted.”
“Then who did I learn to act like a ghost from?”
Liáng Nv lowered her head upon hearing this.
“It was all those people who taught me to do this, scaring people away and giving me some food to eat.”
“What about your child’s father?”
Liáng Nv turned to look at the child, who had fallen asleep after drinking his fill of porridge.
“You killed them.”
Zhou Wu’s eyes widened. “Were any of my husbands among those five men?”
Liáng Nv nodded.
Liáng Nv raised her head blankly. “They were all, how could I stop you?”
“All of them?”
Zhou Wu almost jumped up.
Seeing his big reaction, Liáng Nv strangely asked, “What’s wrong?”
Liáng Nv nodded again.
Zhou Wu looked at the sleeping child in her arms.
“So Dog Paw really has five fathers, but…”
“But you ended them all in one fell swoop.”
“We were hungry, so we had no choice but to do this kind of business.”
