Chapter 117

The highway out of the city was jammed with cars, horns blaring incessantly, but no one dared to get out. The survivors of this city were all anxiously waiting, unsure of what was happening ahead.

At the very front of the long line of vehicles, a truck was parked across the road.

The driver was slumped over the steering wheel, a large number of shiny black beetles with red markings crawling out of his mouth and nose, rustling and swarming all over the vehicle. In the darkness, they quietly crept towards the next car like shadows.

No one had yet noticed the danger, only continuing to honk their horns, trying to wake the seemingly unconscious driver.

A gust of wind blew past, and it drifted into the distance.

“The officials must have run away first,” one person said angrily. He tried his best to look out through the glass, which had been wiped clean by the wipers, but he could still only see a patch of glowing green dots.

Things had happened too suddenly; they hadn’t had time to react. Even though many relatives and friends had died, their minds were still blank, and they hadn’t yet formed a concept of loss.

“Traffic jam, what should we do?” Lin Chu asked anxiously.

“If it really doesn’t work, we’ll have to leave on foot,” Lu Yanli decided. “Anyway, there are cars ahead.”

“We might as well go now, three kilometers, it’s not far,” the car’s navigation showed the distance, and Lin Chu calculated that it was worth a try.

“Okay.”

Lin Chu tried to open the door, but something shocking happened—the car door wouldn’t open!

“That’s strange, is it broken?” No matter how Lin Chu tried to pry the door handle, it wouldn’t budge, as if something was blocking the door from the outside, preventing them from leaving.

The temperature inside the car rapidly dropped to freezing point.

The driver of the vehicle behind was desperately trying to brake, but it was no use. The vehicle seemed to be controlled by an unknown force. The two vehicles crashed together, making a huge noise. After the front of the car caved in, it wasn’t over. The vehicle reversed again, and charged straight towards Lu Yanli, who had already escaped to the roadside bushes!

Lin Chu ran forward without looking back. She figured that the other person wouldn’t die that easily. Looking back, she saw Lu Yanli standing still, as if he had been scared stiff. But just a split second before the vehicle was about to hit him, he dodged away and took off running.

The car crashed into the tree behind him, causing a violent explosion. Gasoline leaked out, and flames soared into the sky. Several cars that weren’t far away were instantly affected, and they too exploded.

The tree trunk snapped and fell, hitting the power lines, and then the utility pole also began to sway, the tangled wires crackling and sparking.

Lu Yanli didn’t care about any of this. He ran forward, ignoring the hateful gazes of the others, dodging the falling sparks from time to time.

He glanced inadvertently, a glimpse of a white figure caught his eye. But when he looked more closely, it was gone again.

Lu Yanli didn’t think it was an illusion. He ran and looked, but now there were only rows of stopped cars on the road, all shrouded in glowing green dots.

Other than that, there was no white figure at all. It seemed like it was just his imagination.

Just as he thought this, he saw it again!

This time, it was closer.

It… yes, it was definitely following him.

Lu Yanli ran even faster. He didn’t even say a word to Lin Chu, directly rushing past her.

Soon, they reached the tollbooth at the edge of the city.

Lu Yanli found the reason for the traffic jam.

The staff in the tollbooth were already dead, leaving only a green skeleton hanging by the window. The barrier was down, and a large truck was parked across the road, the driver nowhere to be found. Behind the tollbooth was a long tunnel.

If this vehicle wasn’t moved, no one would be able to pass.

And…

Lu Yanli walked a few steps towards the tunnel.

He felt a faint, needle-like pain in his head, little by little, not very obvious. Lu Yanli shook his head, trying to shake off the feeling, but the scene in front of him swayed for a moment, as if his eyeballs had been shaken loose.

He focused his attention and looked, but the tunnel was pitch black. Even the lights from the vehicles behind didn’t illuminate it. Looking at it for a long time, the darkness seemed to writhe as if it were alive.

No… that’s not right…

Why had he repeatedly ignored such strange phenomena?

Lu Yanli suddenly looked up at the sky. With the edge of the city as the boundary, the area was clearly divided into two parts, green and black, each like a living thing, trying to devour the other’s territory. Therefore, the dividing line was also wriggling.

Wait!

Like a living thing!

Lu Yanli was startled by his own thought. He looked at the tunnel ahead again, and then turned his head to look at the green shadows behind him.

They would also fight for dominance, wouldn’t they?

Seeing Lu Yanli hesitate, Lin Chu took a breath behind her thick mask. She slowly walked to the truck and looked up at it.

She searched from several angles and finally saw the driver’s figure in the mirror that wasn’t completely covered in green light. He was slumped in his seat, his body shriveled. It was clear that he wasn’t alive.

“How about we use this one?” Lin Chu suggested.

A big truck, enough tonnage, only capable of crushing others. Of course, its lack of agility was also a disadvantage. But now no one knew what was in the tunnel, so the big truck made them feel safer.

It wasn’t a corpse at all, just an empty shell, or rather, a slightly thicker human skin. He didn’t have time to think about where the muscles, bones, blood, and internal organs had gone. Lin Chu pulled the person away and followed Lu Yanli into the car, breaking the door in the process, so that the same thing wouldn’t happen again.

In the traffic not far from them, the drivers all stared wide-eyed, but seeing that they were about to leave, no one said anything. Instead, they hoped that the two would hurry up so that they could escape.

Suddenly, something covered the windshield, as if it had been blown by the wind, sticking firmly to it, blocking their view completely.

“Damn it! What the hell is this!” The driver cursed and turned on the wipers again.

But this time, the wipers were entangled by something and couldn’t start at all. The thin thing swayed in the wind on the glass, refusing to leave, which annoyed the driver so much that he slammed the horn several times.

The driver had just breathed a sigh of relief when he was startled by his wife’s scream.

That thing, that thing was stuck to the glass window next to him. It was clearly a human skin!! The face of the human skin was facing the family of four in the car, the features carved out, the corners of the mouth raised, as if smiling. The soft hands were blown by the wind, stretching to the back window, slapping against the glass.

“Ahhhhh—Help!!”

After the scream, the car window slowly opened.

Rustling, shiny black corpse worms crawled out from inside. On the seats, four light human skins were lying, their hair swaying in the wind.

Then, they were blown up by the wind to find their next target.

There were still many living people here.

“There was screaming from behind, I guess something happened.”

The truck moved its front. Lu Yanli waited for a while, letting the few cars behind rush into the tunnel first. There were no strange occurrences ahead, it wasn’t known if it was safe. But the rear had already become chaotic.

He didn’t hesitate, stepping on the accelerator, the big truck drove into the tunnel.

Just as the vehicle started, Lu Yanli saw it again!

This time, he saw it clearly, it was a white shadow! It was getting closer to him! However, in just a split second, the figure disappeared again, and he had no idea where it was hiding.

Lu Yanli steeled his heart and rushed into the tunnel.

The pain in his head became clearer. He endured it and didn’t move, only wanting to get through it for the time being.

As soon as they entered, they could feel like they had broken into some kind of dark entity and were being swallowed in. The vehicle could hardly move, and even the lights couldn’t illuminate this darkness.

No… it wasn’t darkness.

It was bugs.

Dense, countless bugs, they gathered in the tunnel to act as hunters, patiently waiting for their prey to arrive.

The cars that had rushed in front were silent, having been swallowed by them in the swarm of bugs.

The headache was getting worse…

“You… take over.” Lu Yanli’s foot was on the accelerator, and he signaled for her to take over. Just as Lin Chu grabbed the steering wheel, he shrunk back in his seat in pain, his face pale.

More bugs flew from the front, hitting the windshield with a crackling sound, only to be blown away by the wind.

Fortunately, the tunnel quickly came to an end, and Lin Chu could see the light at the end.

“Not dizzy, are you?”

Lu Yanli slowly shook his head.

He didn’t even have the strength to speak, relying entirely on his willpower to support himself.

“If you’re not dizzy, hold on tight! Slam on the brakes at the end!”

The truck rushed out of the tunnel, and both of them stiffened at the same time.

Outside the tunnel, a giant eye floated in the night sky.

Seeing them come out, the eyeball turned and looked at Lu Yanli.
