Chapter 161 Extra: The Chaos of a Peaceful World (Part 2)

This was Lu Yanli’s first impression.

He stood by the window, pulled open the curtains, and stared out with a pair of lifeless eyes, as if appreciating the scenery.

His wrists, chest… throbbed faintly. To prove he was ill, he had deliberately inflicted wounds on himself beforehand and “inadvertently” revealed them during the medical examination.

In the surveillance footage, the new patient stood by the window, watching all morning, wondering what was so interesting about the small woods outside.

After lunch, he took a nap. In the afternoon, Lu Yanli stood by the window again, watching until dinner. During this time, he didn’t interact with anyone, didn’t speak, just quietly looked into the distance.

Lu Yanli pointed out the window: “There’s someone hanging from the tree, swaying back and forth.”

“He’s watching me.”

His fingertip pointed to the ceiling, “Look, he’s up there.”

His face was pale, like the unhealthy complexion of someone who hadn’t seen sunlight for years. He was thin, so thin that the patient gown seemed like it could fit another person inside. At this moment, the man’s dark eyes stared straight at the doctor as he said these words, which was quite eerie.

Doctor: “…”

The next day, Lu Yanli was pulled in for another examination.

“I’m not sick, really. There really are ghosts in this world, it’s just that you can’t see them.” Lu Yanli stared directly at the nurse drawing his blood.

The needle pierced into the thin, veiny flesh, drawing blood. The nurse coaxed him, “Yes, yes, we can’t see them, but you can.” With that, a tube of blood was drawn, and the needle was deftly pulled out, with a cotton swab pressed against the injection site.

The doctors and nurses had a very good attitude and there was no mistreatment of patients.

As for fake medicine…

Actually taking medicine would harm him. Besides, because no results had been found, the doctor hadn’t prescribed any medicine for him.

Lu Yanli didn’t have that much time to play the lurking game. He set his sights on his neighbor across the hall, intending to steal her medicine.

An old woman lived across the hall. Listening to gossip in private, her children seemed to have a bad relationship with her. Plus, after her husband passed away, the old woman became erratic, so she was admitted to the mental hospital.

If the hospital really wanted to cut corners, targeting people like this would be the most convenient.

Anyway, he was a mental patient now, so doing anything was normal.

Lu Yanli continued to stand by the window for an entire day. At night, after the nurses checked the rooms and turned off the lights, he moved a small stool and continued to sit by the door, staring with wide eyes at the long, dark corridor.

The on-duty nurses checked the rooms regularly, timing it perfectly. The distinct footsteps arrived on time, and the flashlight shone on Lu Yanli.

“Why aren’t you sleeping?”

Lu Yanli looked at her, turned his head to the side, and didn’t speak. He hadn’t shown any signs of hitting people since being admitted, so the nurse gently coaxed him back into the room.

After entering the room, Lu Yanli lay on the bed and closed his eyes, listening to the nurse’s footsteps gradually fade away. He opened his eyes, sat up again, and continued to move the stool to sit in the middle of the corridor until the next round of nurse checks, which startled her.

Lu Yanli: …

Does a mental patient need to care about so much? He continued to do this.

At night, he continued to move towards the old woman’s room.

He needed to steal the medicine, but the nurses were very strict about the patients taking medicine, watching them swallow it before leaving. There would never be any medicine in the rooms normally. If he wanted to make a move, it could only be when the patient was taking medicine.

He ran around several times before returning to his room, taking out the medicine he had hidden under the guise of taking it, breaking each pill in half, swallowing half himself, and hiding the other half again. Not long after, the nurse came to grab him to wash his stomach.

Stomach washes weren’t a pleasant experience, especially for several days in a row. The already thin patient became even thinner, like a skeleton.

On this day, unexpectedly, the old woman’s family from the opposite room also came. Among them was a little girl with pigtails and a red dress, who looked like her granddaughter, holding her parents’ hands, curiously looking around.

“Are you sick too?” the little girl asked Lu Yanli.

The man didn’t speak.

“Alright, don’t talk nonsense.” Her parents obviously didn’t want her to interact with the patient too much and pulled her away. Lu Yanli also walked out with his partner. Before leaving, the little girl waved to him: “Bye-bye.”

“How was it? Did you find anything?” his partner asked him.

“Send these for testing first.”

“I’ll go home first.”

“Hey, hey, are you throwing your life away again? You…”

“It’s okay, I’ll go home first.”

His partner couldn’t persuade him, so he took him to the airport. Lu Yanli bought the nearest flight, transferred several times, removed his disguises one by one, and made sure no one was following him. That night, he returned home.

Unfortunately, his dad was also there.

Even more unfortunately, there were guests at home.

As soon as he entered, the living room was full of people. The little dog Douzai was curled up on the sofa, enjoying everyone’s caresses.

“Oh, Little Lu is back.”

“Like father, like son. I heard Little Lu is good at art…”

“The recent art exhibition…”

An Xingyu was also there, having come with his dad. Before Lu Yanli returned, all the adults in the hall seemed to have set their sights on this high school student, starting to discuss education, the college entrance exam, and similar topics. As soon as Lu Yanli opened the door, he immediately took away a large part of the attention.

The two exchanged a look, feeling a sense of shared suffering, seeing the same kind of plight in each other’s eyes.

Lu Yanli pulled An Xingyu upstairs with a blank expression. Douzai barked and followed, and the two people and a dog entered the room and locked the door in one go.

“Yeah.”

An Xingyu nodded frantically.

Lu Yanli lifted the canvas.

A man stood with his back to the viewer inside the subway, with bright Gesang flowers embroidered on his jacket. In the glass window, his reflection was a horrifying skeleton!

Lu Yanli wanted to say he could learn, but his eyelids twitched, remembering his parents’ control issues, and he swallowed the words back.

Lu Yanli could also cook. When there were many people, he would consciously go to the kitchen to help. At dinner, everyone finally arrived.

Among them was a pair of brothers who looked very refined. The older brother, Yu Huaiyao, was an archaeologist who brought his younger brother, Yu Huan, to the construction site. They discovered traces of tomb robbers, guarded the tomb for several days, and assisted the police in catching the tomb robbing gang.

“Your dad is actually quite worried about you,” she said softly.

Lu Yanli said, “I know.” His father’s eyes had followed him as soon as he entered the door, wanting to say something but embarrassed to open his mouth.

Lu Yanli laughed and shook his head, “I’m not that disciplined, and it’s nice to be able to paint freely.”

This was a polite rejection.

“That’s good too, very free, doing whatever you want.”

“Have you really thought it through?” After dinner, Father Lu was clearing the table, and when his son helped him, he suddenly asked a question out of the blue.

“I will.”
